Massimo Bottura's comparatively low-key Osteria Francescana in Modena, Northern Italy,  took the #1 spot this year. Osteria Francescana — whose quirky dishes like "five stages of Parmigiano Reggiano," "eel swimming up the Po river," and "tribute to Thelonius Monk" have made chef Massimo Bottura's tiny venue in Modena one of Italy's toughest tables — has for the first time earned the top spot on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.

Last year’s top restaurant, the modernist El Celler de Can Roca, in Girona, Catalonia, long been hailed for its combination of Catalan dishes and cutting edge techniques, fell back to #2 after it had reclaimed the #1 spot last year. The restaurant is helmed by three brothers: the oldest on, Joan Roca, mans the kitchen; Josep is sommelier; and the youngest one, Jordi is the pastry chef.

New York's swanky Eleven Madison Park took the third spot, up two places from 2015. This is the best finish for a U.S. restaurant in years.

Lima's Central, with its high-low-altitude tastings,was unchanged at #4.

Chef Rene Redzepi's Noma in Copenhagen, which will serve its last meal later this year before relocating to a new site, fell to No. 5. The 45-seat restaurant features Nordic cuisine based on ingredients foraged from the nearby forests and shores in Denmark.

Mirazur, Menton, France came in at #6, Followed by Mugaritz, Errenteria, Spain at #7, down one place.

Narisawa, Tokyo, Japan, remained at #8. Steirereck, Vienna, Austria, was #9 and Asador Etxebarri, Atxondo, Spain #10.

Among the restaurants that fell out of the top 10 were Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, which plummeted from No. 7 to No. 45, and Gaggan, an Indian restaurant in Bangkok that fell from No. 10 to No. 23.

The Best Restaurant Award has been dominated by El Celler de Can Roca, El Bulli, Noma and Osteria Francescana in the past years. In 2002 and 2006–2009, El Bulli was the world's best restaurant, winning more times than any other restaurant. In 2013 and again in 2015 El Celler de Can Roca won. In 2010 to 2012 and Noma was #1 and again in 2014.
