At the Frankfurt Christmas Market, 2015, Germany

During the holiday season, Christmas Markets are held in cities, towns and villages throughout the country. Here you can buy all kinds of Christmas merchandise and gifts, especially traditional things such as crib figurines, toys, wood carvings, marionettes, candles and lambskin shoes to place underneath your traditional Christmas tree. Many are difficult to resist - as will be the glass of delicious mulled wine you are offered.

The ambience of a typical German Christmas Market is further enhanced by the aromas of hot chestnuts, grilled sausages and other tasty snacks. Youngsters especially will be attracted to the gingerbread biscuits known as Lebkuchen, marzipan figures and other sweets.

Glühwein is made from red wine that was heated and spiced with cinnamon, citrus, vanilla pods, cloves and sugar. In Frankfurt am Main, the base wine can be applewine (hard cider).

Most Christmas Markets start in the last week of November and run through to Christmas Eve or a day or two before. They are usually open every day from 10am to about 8 or 9 pm.

With the family meeting in Frankfurt, Germany, for the 2015 Christmas, the Frankfurt Christmas market was our natural choice this year, althugh we started the 2015 Christmas Market Season in Mainz.

Yesterday evening, on the historic market square in Frankfurt, against the imposing back-drop of the over thousand year old Cathedral of Frankfurt am Main and the Roemer (Mayor’s Office), the air was scented with a Christmassy mixture of roast almonds, gingerbread, hot chestnuts and mulled wine. Large and small visitors gladly let themselves be enchanted by this pre-Christmas atmosphere. On a stroll through the Frankfurt Christmas Market, the stress and hectic pace of everyday life were quickly forgotten.
